Books That Make You Cry

I have never read a book that actually made me cry that I can recall. I mean, I've read plenty of books that are sad, and books that have made other people cry when they've read them. I thought The Fault in Our Stars by John Green would be my undoing after the hype about how sad it was that I was told by all my friends and the internet, but sad though it was, I didn't cry. I felt a little traumatised in my Children's Literature class yesterday when we read through Home and Away by John Marsden and Matt Ottley, or when one of my teachers back when I was six years old read Jenny Angel by Margret Wilde and Anne Spudvilas to the class, but I never cried.

There are a couple of songs that have made me cry. F**kin' Perfect by P!nk, The A Team by Ed Sheeran, Snuff by Slipknot. Even that list is fairly short, considering how much music I listen to on a daily basis.

What have you read, watched, or listened to that has made you cry?

  1. Oh God, I cry all the time and I deliberately go out of my way to read sad books, so the Fables graphic novels (don't kill off the characters I like!), the last volume of Y:The Last Man, The Fault In Our Stars (of course), The Time Traveler's Wife (the ending of the book is far sadder than the film) and most of all, The Meaning Of Matthew (about the brutal murder of Matthew Shepherd, as told by his mother). So, so depressing. Songs I'm just as bad. Several Taylor Swift ones, Everytime by Britney Spears and above all, Joy Williams' If You Wanna Go. It has personal feels and everytime I listen to it, I just can't stop crying. ULTIMATE FEELS.

    1. I do go out of my way to read sad things if and when I can. I don't know why, I just enjoy the feels. But I just haven't cried yet! And I want to... I am going to put all of these books on my to-read list and see if one of them can do it for me. I will let you know what happens! Though this might take some time, as my reading list is already very long :p Thanks for commenting!

  2. I've never had a full on, break-down-into-hysterics-and-lock-myself-in-a-bathroom moment from a book or movie, but a lot of things will make me tear up, books, movies and TV shows.

Good luck in your cry quest!

    1. Ha ha, saying that I want something to make me cry is so strange. I don't mind if I'm not in hysterics and locking myself in the bathroom, but I need to be teary! Thanks for visiting, Jeff :)

    2. I don't think it's so strange. As you say in the post itself, you want books that make you feel. I think most of us read fiction in order to be moved.

Someone mentioned Where the Red Fern Grows. My wife read it out loud to my daughter many years ago--needless to say, she got to a point where she could barely read because she was crying!

  3. The Fault in Our Stars made me weep buckets, but it could be because I'm a mom and have a different perspective. The teens weren't peers but, well, children to me, and it was heartbreaking to think of losing a child to cancer. There's a line in there where Hazel's mom believes her daughter's death is imminent and she says," I won't be a mom anymore," or something like that. Tears, tears, tears.

    1. I remember reading that part. We don't get all that much of the perspective from her mother and father, but what we do get is heartwrenching. Thanks for visiting, L.G. :)

  4. The one book that consistently kills me is 'The Secret History' by Donna Tart. Personally I found The Fault in our Stars to be a little too soppy; in contrast, The Secret History hits me so hard because it is so tragically simple in it's final moments; it ends in a dying whisper, and it really hurts.

    1. Ooh, I don't think I've heard of that one before. I'll have to check it out! :) Thanks for visiting.

  5. The first book that made me cry is WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS. My sixth grade language arts teacher read it aloud to the class and I think half of us were in tears! More recently, I got teary-eyed from Sarah Pekkanen's SKIPPING A BEAT, but in a good way ... the ending is just so beautiful!

    1. That must have been an experience for the kids in your class that year! I haven't heard of either book, so I will have to check them out. Thanks for visiting, Shari :)

  6. I didn't cry reading a book or listening to music, but sometimes I shed tears when there are sentimental moments in a movie. Not sure why, but suddenly some tears are falling down my face .. but it not a full blown cry. But now that I try to think about the names of the movies, I don't recall any name. If you can write one or two pages that will make the reader cry that will be a great feat. I can't do it. I also can't write a scene that will make the reader laugh. Oh Well.

    1. I hope I can write something that will make my readers laugh and cry. Let me know if you remember any of those movies. Thanks for visiting, Giora! :)

  7. The only movie I can recall crying over is Disney's Up. There may have been a novel or two, I cannot remember. Rick Riordan's The Last Olympian and Orson Scott Card's The Speaker for the Dead, perhaps.
